What To Wear Guide

We booked our session with Cait... now what do we wear?

This is a common question I get often so I put together some answers!

Coordinate Outfits

Try not to "match, match." Instead you want to compliment each other and pick colors that work together. Matching can be very cheesy and overrated! You don't want to all blend in. You can even refer to the color wheel to coordinate outfits! Maroons and Mustard Yellows look cute together! Throw in some dark gray's or Navy blue! Olive green is one of my personal favorite's as well!

Let Your Personality Shine!

The purpose of these photos is to show each person as an individual. Forcing people to wear something they normally wouldn't is not going to make them very happy, and that will show in the photos. Wear something you feel GOOD wearing. Something that flatters your body and shows your true style! You do not need to be trendy. If your child wears his shoes on the wrong feet, let him! That is part of who he is at that moment, and will make the best memories!

Use Colors & Patterns

There are SO many colors to choose from! Colors can bring any image to life. Use colors that go together, you don't want to look like a bunch of skittles! PLEASE DO NOT WEAR NEON COLORS! Use patterns carefully.. if one person has a pattern that is PLENTY! Choose textures such as lace, denim, and corduroy. Avoid shirts with large logos, FOX, Volcom, etc. They can be very distracting. We do not want to promote company logos on your home walls!

Dress For The Season AND Location

You want your photos to make sense with the time of year they are being captured. If you are shooting in the winter add some cute scarves, boots, hats, and gloves! Layers are very cute in the snow!! Also no one wants to be frozen and stiff either! ALWAYS bring layers, ESP for little ones.. they get cold the quickest! If you are shooting in the summer, put on a cute sunhat, sandals, and a dress! Have dad wear some shorts, nice shoes, and a button up short sleeve shirt! Most little girls LOVE a cute sundress and headband!

Personalize It

These are your photos to cherish forever. When you are gone they will be all your family and friends have left.. not trying to be sad but it is very true! Photos are memories that are never forgotten. If your family likes music, bring something that will incorporate that into your photos! If you like camping or boating, lets go near water or trees! Bring along any personal items that are of value to you or your family! Example: grandmas old quilt to wrap the kids up in, OR grandmas old basket to put baby in! Grab whatever you have in your home that means something to you or your family! Make it special and meaningful!!

Plan Ahead

Please PLEASE plan your outfits in advance. Choosing clothes for one person or multiple people can be the MOST stressful part of any photoshoot planning! If you're like me you wait till the last minute then freak out beforehand and then everyone is in a panic and nothing goes right! Soooo lets not let that happen. Give yourself plenty of time. If you are ordering items online make sure to do so with enough shipping time. Think your outfits through and if you need any help or advice SEND ME PHOTOS! I would much rather help you, then have you stress yourself out! I am always available!

Remember Your Home

It may sound silly, but remember what your decor is like inside your home. What color is your couch? Do you have a gorgeous living room rug? How about throw pillows? These photos will be displayed on your walls so you want the outfits you choose to fit well with the atmosphere! What colors do you have in your home? What is your theme? Do you like more neutral colors and earth tones? What will match well if you put up a 16x20 inch canvas? Every person who walks into your home will see these printed photos so make sure they are going to impress! These are all things to think about when planning your photoshoot outfits!

If I were planning outfits for my family...

Here's how I would go about planning photos for my own family session! We are a family of 4, husband, myself, and two kiddos age 5 & 2! What
I normally do first is pick out either my outfit or my kiddos and then I coordinate the hubby to what we are wearing. (He's not nearly as picky as I am.) I like to always put one of my little boys in plaid if not both and the rest of us in a solid color or texture. Kid's look adorable in plaid and mine like to call it "their handsome shirts!" It makes them feel extra special!
